==================================
Sony was founded in 1946 by Masaru Ibuka (1908~1997) and Akio Morita (1921~1999). They started their business in a Tokyo department store with approximately 20 employees and initial capital of 190,000 yen.
They complemented each other with a unique blend of product innovation and marketing savvy. Ibuka was a practical visionary and Morita was a true marketing pioneer.
The company was named Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo KK (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation). In the beginning, the company produced radio parts and rice cookers, among other things. The rice cooker product was unreliable. Today Sony is the America's most respected brand. The company's consolidated sales and operation revenues reached 7,475,400 million yen and 158,500 employees worldwide (as of March 31st 2006).
In 1957 the company produced a pocket-sized radio and one year later was renamed as Sony (sonus in Latin means sound). In 1961 Sony Corporation of America was the first Japanese company to list in Wall Street.
Sony, among other Japanese companies, took active part in the rebirth of Japan as an industrial power. "We in the free world can do great things. We proved it in Japan by changing the image of ‘Made in Japan’ from something shoddy to something fine", said Morita. You should bear in mind that when Sony first attempted to enter the American market Japanese products were regarded as of the lowest quality.
Morita and Sony's attributes were to create new markets. Describing what he called Sony's "pioneer spirit", Morita said: "Sony is a pioneer and never intends to follow others. Through progress, Sony wants to serve the whole world. It shall be always a seeker of the unknown.... Sony has a principle of respecting and encouraging one's ability... and always tries to bring out the best in a person. This is the vital force of Sony".
